2013 Hacienda Monasterio Crianza – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate – 95/100
‘The wonderful 2013 Crianza from Hacienda Monasterio is one of the great successes from a challenging vintage that resulted in a heterogeneous collection of wines, where you can find the best and the worst. 2013 was a shorter vintage and they didn’t do a Reserva or Reserva Especial that year, so the very best grapes from their estate vineyards went into this Crianza.
The final blend was 80% Tempranillo and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, and they didn’t use any Merlot this year. It’s a very precise vintage, with symmetry and a chiseled mouthfeel coupled with very good acidity, a little higher than in 2014 and with half a degree less of alcohol.
The fruit is red rather than black and the tannins are super fine and elegant, providing for that laser-cut precision. This is clearly among the best wines from the vintage.’
2014 Hacienda Monasterio Crianza – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate – 94/100 ‘I got to taste the 2014 Crianza, which was fascinating to compare with the 2013. It is very harmonious and the oak does not play an important role in the aromatics. The tannins always have that limestone texture that also adds a sapid character making it very tasty. This is a great year for the Crianza, and as I mentioned, it was fascinating to taste it next to the 2013, as both faithfully reflected the character of each vintage.’
 Crianza 2013 – Vinous – Antonio Galloni – 92/100
‘Opaque ruby. Deeply perfumed aromas of black raspberry, blueberry, floral pastilles and smoky minerals, with hints of cured tobacco and vanilla in the background. Seamless and appealingly sweet, offering energetic red berry and cola flavors and a touch of five-spice powder on the back half. Gains weight with air and finishes on a smoky note, with sneaky tannins adding shape.’
Crianza 2014 – Vinous – Antonio Galloni – 92-94/100
‘Lurid ruby. Spice-accented cherry and dark berries on the hugely perfumed nose. Supple and broad but energetic as well, offering bitter cherry and raspberry liqueur flavors that pick up a smoky nuance with air. Closes on an appealingly sweet note, with outstanding persistence; gentle tannins lend shape and grip.
2015 The Wine Advocate Robert Parker – 94/100
The flagship Crianza is now simply referred to as 2015 Hacienda Monasterio. This is their biggest production, with some 181,630 bottles in this classical and powerful vintage where the secret was an early harvest to keep the acidity and freshness in the wine and keep the alcoholic degree under control. It’s mostly Tempranillo, with 10% each Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, fermented with indigenous yeasts and with long and soft macerations. It matured for some 18 months in French oak barrels, 25% of them new (a percentage that has been gradually lowered in the last few years). It has a balanced nose, with nuance and subtleness, with the oak nicely folded into the fruit, incipient perfume, and even if young, you can almost see where it can go in bottle. The foreign varieties are not really noticed; they are very integrated. The palate has terrific balance and refined tannins. There is no heat or excess ripening whatsoever. For a moment, I thought I was tasting the 2014. This is one of the best and most widely available wines from Ribera del Duero. It should evolve nicely in bottle.
