About ITALIA, BAROLO DOCG Collina Serragrilli "La Túr"
'Piedmont' is a region in Northern Italy that is closed off from France and Switzerland on the north and west sides by the Alps. It is a bit like the Burgundy of Italy, it is a neat and well organized region. The town of 'Alba' is located in the center of the hilly 'Langhe', where wine making in Piedmont reaches its peak. This Roman city is the center of the region and buzzes with activity. It is the home of a number of large wine companies, somewhat comparable to what Beaune is to the Burgundy region. Barolo and Barbaresco are undeniably the 2 great lords of Piedmont. They can be counted among Italy's greatest wines. They are made in the northwest of Italy with only one grape: the Nebbiolo. Although Barbaresco may sometimes suffer a bit from the great fame of the slightly more famous Barolo, he is not inferior to his great cousin. Barolo usually has a little more power, but Barbaresco can count on a bit more elegance. The best proof that they are worth each other is that few experts can tell the difference between the two in a blind tasting. Their two relatively small production areas are only a dozen kilometers apart around the city of Alba. Both have been entitled to DOCG status (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) since 1980. A Barbaresco must ripen for 2 years before being allowed to be sold, a Barolo 3. In the town of 'Neive' lies the relatively small (16 hectares) wine estate 'Collina Serragrilli'. It has been owned by the 'Lequio' family since the nineteenth century (5 generations!). Today it is the three sisters Rosanna, Daniela and Antonella Lequio who run the domain. They make Barolo, Barbaresco and Barbera D'Alba. Their Barolo has a beautiful ruby red color with slight evolution. At rest an elegant nose of superimposed plums, ripe black fruit and liquorice. During rolling, these aromas are enhanced and a pleasant hint of dark chocolate is added. In the mouth pleasant refreshing acidity coupled with cherries and cherries, some liquorice and a nice bitterness in the final. The tannins are nicely blended and the finish is long. Since the wine has already matured for 3 years in the cellars of the estate (2 years in the barrel, 1 year in the bottle), it is immediately ready to drink. If you wish, you can keep it for sure until its 10th year! Also serve this wine a little cooler, at about 16 to 17 degrees.
